This 1955 Mercedes Gullwing was photographed at the legendary Monterey Car week in 2000. Car lovers all over the world flock to Monterey to see and be seen with the best cars ever built, whether modern or classic. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was the first of the SL-Class grand tourer and the fastest production car of the day. Introduced in 1954 as a 2- seat coupe with gull-wing doors, the open roadster came later. Built by Daimler Benz AG, the direct fuel injection production model was based on the highly successful and less powerful carbureted overhead cam straight 6 racer, the W194. Successful and today iconic, the 300 SL stood alone with its unique doors, first ever production fuel injection, and world's fastest top speed. The coupe was available from 1955 to 1957, the roadster from 1957 to 1963, and 3258 cars were built in both models total. In racing, W. Engel won the 1955 European Rally Championship in a Gullwing, this car also had a victory in the Rali Vinho da Madeira 1960.
